Look, I have a lot of respect for Steven Spielberg (because he car pools not because of all his films) and Roy Schieder but out of any film that both of these guys has made why commemorate JAWS? The impact it made all those years ago was wild - enough to make anyone sick to the stomach to go swimming and enough to practically make anything with a fin extinct. Have you seen it lately though? Its really not worth sitting through (only if your really sick in bed and you can't manage to flick the remote). But look at these guys, they're looking great (Schieder should put some socks on though because only Julio Iglesias gets away with those shenanigans).
Yes Schieder was hot in a sort of twisted way in JAWS, but what about MARATHON MAN? If you want to revisit anything in your career you would have to pull out the good stuff - wouldn't you?
An unforgettable moment between Lawrence Olivier and Dustin Hoffman - Hoffman being a devout follower of The Method would work himself up into a frenzy to shoot these scenes - Olivier would simply remark; "Just act!"

How can I tie in Cruise's recent departure from Paramount Pictures you might ask? Simple. It was the above incident that started his slow demise from their friendly coffers. Steven Spielberg was on the phone during the show begging Tom to promote the abysmal WAR OF THE WORLDS - Cruises mantra was just 'Katie, Katie, Katie'. Oh yeah and all that rubbish about how no one should take anything for post-natal depression.

Wow the movie Jaws is thirty years old? I loved it when it came out all those years ago! I watched it with my son last month and we gave it a two thumbs down.
Tom Cruise has really been on a self destructive path hasn't he? I am sure that no one wants to hear his views on religion, giving birth or any other medical condition. He should just stick to what he knows best, being an actor.
Take care and have a great week!
On a somewhat related topic, I just got finished watching that movie "Open Waters" about the 2 scuba divers who were left out to sea to die. Your post just reminded me of it because one of the divers was bitten by a shark.
Ever see the movie? I loved the first Jaws, all the rest were awful! Years ago, I went to Universal Studios in California where you can go on a tour of their backlot and one of the spots they drive past is this lake where the shark comes out of the water and scares passers by. Can't believe how fake that shark looked!
Thanks Rain, have a great week yourself. I have to admit though, I am drawn to Tom Cruise because of the freak factor - everything he says is nuts - and there's a Michael Jacksonesque/Elvis style to his demise(I cant believe I said both there names in the same sentence but its because they live in a vacuum).
Hi Blair Bitch, yes indeed I've seen OPEN WATER and found it to be an excruciating experience that I masochistically enjoyed.
I've always wanted to see that clapped out shark emerge out of the Universal Studio lake - my Auntie Pat saw it years ago and we were all impressed.
Hi Sheila,
Great post! It’s hard to believe it’s been 30-years since we were shrieking and afraid to go to the beach because of “Jaws”. I first saw the movie in a theater that was on built on pylons over the Pacific Ocean, and was petrified that a shark would come up through the floorboards and attack the audience! Your comment about it being a total bore after 3 decades indicates that it wasn’t able to withstand the test of time like any true Classic movie can.
I think Steven Spielberg had another “horror” on hands with Tom Cruise and decided to cut his losses and run. It’s going to be interesting to see who’s brave enough to hire Cruise, and if he’s going to continue his charades and tirades under new management. Do you remember the 1999 movie “Magnolia”? Perhaps this is the closest we’ve come to seeing the “real” Tom Cruise. Maybe the prudent thing would be for him to become a spokesperson for Scientology; traveling the world, performing a one man “revival” tent show! Let’s hope he’s made some judicious investments and can afford to be out of work for awhile.
Yesterday I inherited two Australian boomerangs, one dating back to World War II. As I was hanging them on the wall, I thought of you…..
Wow, now that would have been hilarious to be in that audience Miss Litzi and watch while everyone slowly raised their feet off the ground to avoid the sharks below...
I loved MAGNOLIA and believe that it was one of Cruise's best moments in his career (that along with BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY. I love the idea of the one man revival tent show! One of our Australian reporters from 60 minutes had to attend a four hour seminar at the Scientology Centre before Cruise would allow the interview. While they were chatting, Cruise practically snapped the reporters head off when he mentioned that Nicole Kidman was really the love of his life. Me thinks he protests too much...
You inherited Australian Boomerangs - now I'm sure there is a tale or two in that - have you ever thrown one? Its great fun!
Hi Sheila,
You and I are of like minds regarding Tom Cruise’s movies; I too think that “Magnolia” and “Born of the Fourth of July” were his best performances to date. Well, if you don’t count bouncing up and down on Oprah Winfrey’s sofa as his exhibition of a lifetime.
That’s very interesting that an Australian reporter had to attend a 4-hour seminar on Scientology BEFORE conducting the interview; I suppose this was to give him a “taste” of what was to come? I too have heard that Tom gets quite testy whenever anyone mentions Nicole Kidman’s name; do you think perchance there might be some truth there and that’s why he hasn’t married Katie Holmes…mother of his child??
My Father picked up the first boomerang during World War II when he was stationed in Australia; the second one was purchased when he and my Mother toured there around 1990. Both are natural wood with lovely Maori-like drawings or symbols on them. They’re very lovely pieces, and no, I’ve never thrown one? Have you??
Hi Sheila,
Loved your post. Speilberg and his little shark movie scarred me for life.
When I was little I never felt safe in the water even my own bathtub!!! Jaws terrified me and even last week while we were camping I was thinking of sharks as I was swimming and we were swimming in a lake!
OK maybe my fear is a bit irrational but I blame it on Jaws.
Hi Sheila and D. Prince,
Several years ago one of the replicas used in the movie “Jaws” actually killed someone. It was on display somewhere and apparently the mechanism holding the sharks mouth open let go. Just goes to prove we’re still not safe from “Jaws”, even after 30-years! I live very near the ocean, and every time I walk on the beach I think of the movie….
I know where youre coming from D.Prince, I think at one stage I was worried about the drain hole in the bath and still to this day I have to hop out before I pull out the plug...(it might have also been because there was rumored to be crocodiles roaming the city sewers)
Hey Miss Litzi, that sounds like a great story.. I wonder if it happened at Universal Studios?
reading my mind again Sheila... I was thinking about Roy Schieder after hearing about the Jaws anniversary. Did you know I once saw him in the flesh in NYC?
Well our six degrees of separation game just went up a notch didn't it?
Hi Sheila,
Rumors of crocodiles roaming the sewers? OMG! Didn't you worry about one of them coming up out of the toilet?
Did this turn out to be another "urban legend"?
You know that urban legends always have that small ounce of possibility in it Miss Litzi..
Hi Sheila,
Sort of like “where’s there’s smoke, there’s fire”?? I’ve heard of snakes coming up from toilets in India, but crocodiles in the sewers? Have you ever seen one loose (not in captivity)?? Perhaps this would be a good use for a boomerang….
