MIFF 2006 - Geoffrey Rush In Conversation

Geoffrey Rush poses before a stage conversation as part of The 2006 Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) at The Forum theatre, Melbourne, Australia.

Geoffrey Rush is one of those character actors that pleases the senses despite having the occasional mediocre script. He shot to international fame playing David Helfgott in SHINE. I don't know why but I can't stand that film (can I just indulge for a moment and add that my six degrees of separation from him is that the real David Helfgott came up to me out of the blue at a book launch and planted a kiss on my cheek - if you're familiar with the film you will know that this happens to anyone in close proximity to him) anyway, he went on to far more superior roles in ELIZABETH, QUILLS, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS. One role that I would have loved to show a photo of is his guest spot on ABC's KATH AND KIM (now that would have been the icing on the cake).

With Lyn Redgrave in SHINE

QUILLS

Playing Peter Sellers (could have done with a meatier script).

Hi Sheila,
I too have always admired Geoffrey Rush’s acting abilities. I’ve not seen The Life and Death of Peter Sellers; after your comment, perhaps I’ll skip it.

Are you over being sick? It’s nice to have you back and producing terrific posts like this one!

You got one planted on your David Helfgott! That is quite the Sixth Degree...

What didn't you like about Shine?

Thankyou Miss Litzi - I feel 100%! - can I just add that THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS is still worth a look at despite my criticism - especially if youre a fan of Sellers - there is some great references to some of the films he made.

D.Prince - Shine's publicity in Australia at the time it was released was in overdrive - it didnt matter what you were watching or listening to SHINE would somehow creep into the vernacular. When I finally saw the film I felt a mixture of 'job well done' and 'boy I'm over this' (plus everyone when nuts when Rush won the best actor Oscar on top of all that - probably deserved it but I couldn't tell in the end).

Got it. I'd feel the same as you if it took place in Canada and if Rush was Canadian.

We kind of beat local success stories to death.

Glad you're feeling better :)
